Hi,
My name is John Goldsmith. Welcome to my blog.
During the day, I’m an online teacher with a K-12 virtual school, “The Fraser Valley Distance Education School” located in Chlliwack, British Columbia, Canada. I’ve been with the school for almost 20 years – since before the web!
While teaching online may be my job, it’s also one of those jobs that I can’t believe I’m being paid to do. I love surfing the ‘Net, finding new resources and trying out new technologies.
In the past, when I’ve found something new and interesting, I’d pass it on via e-mail, to a group of friends. All too often, what I thought was cool and useful, would not interest others – at the time. Six months later however, I’d get a frantic message saying, “Remember that online photo editor you told us about last May? I really need it now but can’t find your message. Do you still have the link?” As often as not, I’d be unable to find it too. So, this blog is my attempt to impose some order on the “new stuff” chaos and make available to others, cool and interesting web resources in a more permanent and accessible format.
Because I’m an online educator, my focus tends to be on practical and useful items which will help me (and other K-12 online educators) do my job better.
It’s also a way for me to find out more about blogging in general – one of the Web 2.0 education sensations that’s sweeping the nation. How easy (or difficult) is it? Does it have a place in the classroom? What are the practical considerations to be aware of? That sort of thing. In my experience, the only way to really learn about something is to do it – so here I am.
