Greetings,
PUBLIC DOMAIN PICTURES is a web site offering free, public domain photos for download.
I’m not sure how today’s site – PUBLIC DOMAIN PICTURES – escaped my notice. I thought I had located all the good, free clipart and photo sites. Obviously not because today’s site is a dandy.
PUBLIC DOMAIN PICTURES has over 17,000 pictures available. All are public domain and available to download at no cost.
The collection is categorized in several different ways, such as, by subject heading, by popularity, by latest images, etc. There is also a key word search option.
When a desired image is found, clicking on the thumbnail will bring up the “Picture Page”. This is a web page containing a larger version of the picture plus a wealth of information about the picture itself such as who took it, what camera/lens was used, the number of times the picture has been downloaded and much more. Also found on the page may be other pictures taken by the photographer which are available – at a price. Those shots are on other web sites such as “Fotolia”.
So, PUBLIC DOMAIN PICTURES is one more example of a Win/Win situation. Everything on the site is free but many photographers will use their free contributions as a way to advertise or promote their commercial offerings. To do this, these photographers also need a “Premium” account on the PUBLIC DOMAIN PICTURES site, which is the revenue stream that supports the site.
This also gives the user the option of staying with just the free stuff or, if they really like a photographer’s work, buying some of their commercial photos.

Bottom line? I really like PUBLIC DOMAIN PICTURES. The site has over 17,000 pictures available and most are very high quality. While there are not as many techie pictures as I would have liked, there are a huge number of “people” shots – great fro brochures and bulletins. There are also a few clipart images available as well. All are free to download an use in non-commercial and in some cases, commercial projects.
Teacher note: There are some pictures that might be considered a bit, “racy” but nothing that can’t also be found on TV or in magazines.
The site is free to use and no account is required to access and download pictures.
