PIXLR-O-MATIC: Free, Online, Image Editing and Enhancing Program

Pixlr logoGreeting,

PIXLR-O-MATIC is a free, online image editing and enhancing program.

I think today’s app – PIXLR-O-MATIC – was created for people like me – folks who want to do something interesting and different with their pictures but have never mastered the intricacies (or price) of Photoshop.

I’ve tried several similar services and PIXLR-O-MATIC stacks up pretty well in comparison.

To utilize this app, users must access the site’s home page. From there, they can upload a picture from their computer or use their computer’s web cam to snap a photo. Once that’s done, users can then try-out a wide array of visual effects and enhancements. PIXLR-O-MATIC even provides a photo editor should some cropping be needed.

When finished, the “enhanced” picture can be saved back to the computer’s desktop or stored on the IMM.IO online photo storage site (a IMM.IO account is required for that).

To give this app a work-out, I tried enhancing a picture of me son’s cat, Koa.

Bottom line? PIXLR-O-MATIC is a lot of fun, once that basics are mastered. It’s very easy to apply a multitude of special effects, backgrounds and enhancements. The effects are grouped together by type so it is possible to apply more then one. Unfortunately, only one picture at a time can be uploaded and enhanced. There’s also only one link to a online photo storage site. Links to more popular sites like Flickr and Photo-bucket would be a nice add-on.

The good news for educators is however that no account is needed to access and use this program. It’s wide open for students to use.
