SEAMONKEY: Free Downloadable Web Browser/HTML Editor

Greetings,

SEAMONKEY is a free, downloadable app that’s really four programs in one; a web browser, an HTML editor, an e-mail program and contacts/appointment manager.

I recently read a blog post from a site called, “Six Revisions” which listed 10 web browsers that most people have probably never heard off. One of them was a program called SEAMONKEY. SEAMONKEY!?! I thought everyone knew about this marvellous little app? Apparently not – but I can help with that.

SEAMONKEY just happened to be one of my favourite programs. It’s an open source development project sponsored by the Mozilla group – the same folks who are also responsible for the more well known web browser – Fire Fox and the popular e-mail program, Thunderbird. No wonder SEAMONKEY is so obscure. It’s well known stable mates are hogging the spot light.

It also means that, like Fire Fox, development of the program is active and on-going plus there are versions available for Windows, Mac OS X and Linux.

So what does the program do? Quite a bit. It’s a combination web browser, WYSIWYG or graphic HTML editor, e-mail program, address book, and IRC client all combined into one relative small, light weight – “jack of all trades” -program.

In terms of functionality, the web browser is adequate for most surfing duties but lacks among other things, the plug-in capabilities of FireFox.

The same comments can also be said for the e-mail client (adequate but no Thunderbird) and the HTML editor (adequate but no Dreamweaver).

The HTML editor is the star of the show (IMHO). With it’s WYSIWYG/graphical user interface and easy to use characteristics, it’s more then capable of handling most web page creation projects or editing chores. The HTML code produced is very clean with no extraneous or proprietary characters.

All in all, it’s a nice little program with a lot of capability and functionality. Because it is small, it also runs just fine on older, less powerful computers – the kind found in many classrooms and computer labs.

Enjoy :-)
