YOU ARE HERE: Web Site For “Tween” Aged Consumers

Greetings,

YOU ARE HERE is a web site created to help “T’ween” and Teen Aged consumers (among other things) protect their personal and private information and spot scams.

Much has been made of Internet Safety and the need to make young people more aware and cautious. What most folks don’t realize is that the Internet is not – in and of itself, the problem. Instead, many teen-ages today lack the life skills and experience to make good decisions, whether it’s on the ‘Net or at the mall.

The American Federal Trade Commision (FTC), the government organization charged with protecting consumers and consumer rights has created a web site to help young consumers learn about protecting their privacy and spotting scams.

The site itself reminds me a lot of the Canadian Media Awareness site. The same type of scenario or role playing methodology is use to give young players as real an experience as possible within an online simulated environment.

The environment in this case is the mall or in this case, a virtual mall. In each section of the mall, students learn new concepts such as advertising techniques, target marketing, suspicious claims, privacy (online and off), bogus marketing “miracle” products, and tip-offs to rip-offs.

The scenarios, for the most party are well done and relatively believable.

The site is free to use and account is needed.
