SHOWDOCS is a free, web based, interactive whiteboard similar in functionality for Elluminate/vClass.
Another contender in the shared/interactive whiteboard market is SHOWDOCS. This app mirrors some functions available through industry heavyweight Elluminate as well as offering some unique options of it’s own.
The general windows layout is much the same but SHOWDOCS makes it even easier to share and collaborate on various types of files but putting big button in the middle of the whiteboard. No hunting through menus for these options.
In addition, SHOWDOCS adds in a word processor, image editor and calculator which can be accessed by any of the participants rather then everyone using an app that is being shared from one person’s desktop.
SHOWDOCS also has a good ol’ collaborative whiteboard too.
Speed and stability are good.
No account is needed to use SHOWDOCS but there are some limits on functionality that go away with an account. This applies only to the session moderator. Participants need no accounts at all – just a web link to connect.
SHOWDOCS does however have one large deficit – no audio or integration with a service like Skype. That’s not to say the conference calling features of Skype couldn’t be used here but there’s not the neat integration I’ve seen with similar apps.
SHOWDOCS does provide chat which is better then nothing.
SHOWDOCS also does not have the participant controls most educators would like.
Nevertheless, I like this app and could imagine it’s use in a Profession Development context.
