PIXER.US is a free online photo-editing service.
It’s been a while since a new online photo-editing service has appeared on the web. That’s hardly surprising given the many excellent apps such as Abobe’s Photoshop Express, Aviary and Picnik that are already available. So, anything new had better be good – very, very good.
I’m happy to report that PIXER.US is indeed, very good. To begin with, PIXER.US requires no sign-up or account to use. Simply access the site, upload an image from a local computer, and start editing. When the editing is done, download the finished product. There are however, a couple of features missing. For example, I couldn’t find a way to import images from online photo-sharing sites such as Flickr or Photo-bucket. In addition, PIXER.US allows only one picture at a time to be uploaded and edited. I would have preferred more.
The program itself has all the basic features and functions usually found in this sort of app. These include features such as “rotate”, “flip”, “resize” and “crop”. The “resize” feature is nice, with a slider to make a picture bigger or smaller.
There are also controls to adjust colour levels and picture clarity. These too employe slider controls for ease of use.
PIXER.US also offers a couple of additional special effects options which go above and beyond the basics. These include “ColorFX”, “SpecialFX” and “Effects”. The “Effects” option didn’t seem to work – at least not on any picture I tried. “ColorFX” and “SpecialFX” do work and do offer some interesting and unique visual effects that can be applied to a picture. One example is “Clouds”, a SpecialFX option that I’ve applied to the picture below..
As I said in the beginning, PIXER.US is a “very good” program. It is simple and easy to use, has basic functionality, is relatively quick when rendering changes or updates and requires no account. Is that enough to make it an Internet favourite. I’ll leave that decision to you.
