SCHOLAS is a new web based service which provides scholars and academics a free place on the web to store and share publications, research and resources.
It’s a nice idea to provide scholars and academics a free online space to store and share their research and writings however at this point, SCHOLAS is long on ideals and short on specifics. As far as I can tell, anyone can sign up for an account and upload anything they want. There is no mechanism to determine what is or is not scholarly. Everything that is uploaded is given it’s own unique URL so its easy to link to and reference.
At this point, it’s hard to tell how many people have signed up for accounts and uploaded content. The only way to access materials is by keyword searching. At best, that’s a shot in the dark without some knowledge of what’s available. Perhaps SCHOLAS will add an index or directory to facilitate that process.
